I offer a full range of editorial services, including manuscript evaluations, developmental editing, and line editing. You can combine services or blend them, depending on your needs.
A manuscript evaluation provides editorial guidance. This critique offers a constructive yet honest and rigorous evaluation of your work, as well as conceptual and creative guidance for your project. I will provide an editor’s report as a roadmap for you to reference as you move forward with further development and revisions of your manuscript.
If you’re writing fiction, we’ll discuss elements such as plot, character development, continuity, structure, pacing, and overall impression. I may suggest changes in plot development, give you tips on how to enhance your characters, or make general comments on your writing, narrative, or dialogue, all meant to help you achieve your goals as a writer.
If you’re writing nonfiction, we’ll discuss structure, pacing, argument, thesis, style, and approach. I’ll also assess your writing style, and we’ll discuss whether the style is appropriate for your subject matter and audience. I can also provide evaluations for nonfiction proposals and writing samples.
In a developmental edit, I will analyze your manuscript from the big-picture view down to the details. A developmental edit helps to shape a story by providing you with in-text comments and suggestions about specific passages.
As in a manuscript evaluation, if you’re writing fiction, we’ll discuss elements such as plot, character development, continuity, structure, pacing, and overall impression. On the other hand, if you’re writing nonfiction, we’ll discuss structure, pacing, argument, thesis, style, and approach. However, unlike in a manuscript evaluation, a developmental edit will include comments and markup within the manuscript itself, providing you with more detailed direction for moving into your next draft.
Line editing is what makes writing come alive. I will consider the cadence and rhythm of your writing at the sentence and paragraph level. In a line edit, I will make improvements to pacing, structure, organization, and transitions and do more extensive rewriting and restructuring of sentences and paragraphs than I would in a developmental edit.
In fiction, this level of editing also includes feedback about scene and character details, assistance with character and plot development, and frequent in-text comments about other issues arising in the manuscript.
My versatile writing skills include specialties in copywriting and grant writing. I can work on my own or within a team—whatever works best for each project.
Whether you need copy written for your website, marketing and promotional material for your book launch, blog posts, or perhaps an author bio and promotional copy for your self-published book, let’s consult about your copywriting needs.
Does your book project require a grant to underwrite its high-quality production values? Does your organization need funding to support your outreach and education initiatives? Is your press requiring a subsidy to publish your work? I will research granting agencies and funding opportunities. In consultation with you, I’ll collect application materials, draft an application, and upon your review and approval, finalize the grant application.
